History
St.George Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Lachine, Quebec was found in 1945 with assistance of Father Sluzar by 50 Ukrainian parishioners of the St.John Suchawsky parish (located on 6th Ave., under the jurisdiction of the Russian Church).
The 10 parishioners of the newly founded parish of St.George who signed the petition and request on behalf of their fellow worshippers, together with Father Sluzar of St.Sophie, to be accepted into the folds of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada (UOCC), on July 3, 1945, were: Mykola Genga, Mykola Hutsuliak, Ivan Zelepuzhin, Jurij Handziuk, Jurij Mysliuk, Ilia Towstiuk, Jurij Towstiuk, Wasyl Nyklia, Ilia Podilchuk, Wasyl Melnychuk. These ten with 46 other participants at the first orgaznizational meeting on May 12,1945 can be regarded as the founders of St.George’s parish.
Consistory of UOCC in Winnipeg was asked to assign a permanent priest to Lachine. The first priest was Father Onufryj Iwaniuk (1948-1949). Others who succeeded Father Iwaniuk have been:
